Simple tips to help relieve headaches

If you are reading this you are probably rubbing your temples with a dull ache or sharp pain in your head. The headache is one of the most common issues that people deal with. I want to share some ways to relieve headaches with my community Kelowna & West Kelowna.

As an Osteopathic Practitioner we think more than just the head. The connections between the shoulders, neck, jaw and head should be taken into consideration. First start with stretching your neck.

1️⃣ Put your hands on your chest and engage / pull down the skin and bring your chin to the sky. You should feel a stretch in the front of your neck. You can now roll your head side to side so you feel the stretch on the side of your neck. Hold when you feel it stretching. Take big breaths while holding. This will loosen up the tissues travelling up into your head and jaw.

2️⃣ Drop your head down to your chest and let it hang. You can use your hand to pull your head down further to feel more of a stretch in the back of the neck. You can then rock back-and-forth to engage the sides of your neck. This loosens the tissues in the back of your neck travelling up to your head.

3️⃣ Put both your hands on the sides of your heads just above your ears above your temples. Engage the skin and press into the muscle and pull upwards and hold for about 30 seconds. You can also do circular motions and holding when you feel a tight spot. Remember to take big breaths while doing all of these

4️⃣ Next work the jaw. Place your hands on the sides of your jaw and press into the muscle. Slowly open and close your mouth while pressing into the muscle and pulling down towards your teeth. This is taking tension off your TMJ.

Hope this helps!
